Smart Video Mixer for Small-format Setups

Mix up to four video sources at up to 1080p resolution with the Roland V-1HD video mixer. Four HDMI inputs are ready for video cameras, computers, Blu-ray players and other sources. Utilize professional compositing effects like picture-in-picture and keying effects. Controls are simple and laid out intelligently, and you can even control the V-1HD remotely via USB or MIDI, with the software control app for Mac, PC and iPad. We know at Sweetwater there are plenty of applications that require high-quality video mixing within a minimum of space. For powerful yet compact video mixing, check out the Roland V-1HD video mixer.

Roland V-1HD 4-channel Video Mixer at a Glance:
  • Backlit buttons for quickly identifying video streams
  • Wide range of transition effects
  • Compositing effects for professional productions
Backlit buttons for quickly identifying video streams

For easy viewing in low-light conditions, the Roland V-1HD video mixer has backlit, color-coded buttons. Red-lit buttons indicate the current video source that's being sent to the output, while green-lit buttons show you the video that will be output on the next transition. And buttons for inputs with connected sources will be illuminated so you always know where signal streams are present.

Wide range of transition effects

The Roland V-1HD packs a variety of transition effects: in addition to the standard cut, you get four Mix transitions and 30 Wipe transitions. Three transition selection buttons make it fast and easy to make a style change. Use the T-Fader and BPM Sync buttons to sync visuals to a music performance. Use the Freeze button to pause the incoming video. While the V-1HD is a compact video mixer, you have a lot of control over your transitions.

Compositing effects for professional productions

You can create professional compositing effects with the Roland V-1HD, making it ideal for seminars and presentations. Use Picture in Picture or the Split function to composite two videos in one screen. Use Chroma Key/Luminance Key compositing for using green-screen backgrounds or for overlaying computer generated images over your video.

Roland V-1HD 4-channel Video Mixer Features:
  • Video mixer with 4 HDMI inputs and 2 HDMI outputs
  • 12 channels of audio mixing: 4 stereo audio inputs from the HDMI ports, stereo line-level input, and mic-level input

Great bang for the buck

If you tried to count the different ways you could set up to live switch between multiple cameras and sources, you'd run out of fingers. But if your setup would benefit from a conventional video switcher approach, and you aren't made of money, the Roland V-1HD deserves a detailed look.

At first glance, it looks like a very simple program/preview 2-bus switcher, and it will do that basic task all day. Dig deeper, and you will find features that, with a little planning on your part, allow you to emulate a 1 M/E (mix/effects) switcher. In my view, the V-1HD isn't a true 1 M/E switcher, but it is close.

You can get 1 M/E switchers at about the same price point from other manufacturers, yes. I chose the Roland because the installation location is in the auditorium, not a separate control room. As a result, I needed a solution with a quiet cooling fan. The Roland meets that requirement. The first installation I did with one of these units is still running strong years later, so the V-1HD has demonstrated high reliability in my experience. It's available with HDMI I/O and (for a little more money) SDI I/O. I chose HDMI due to connectivity in the pre-existing camera installation.

You will want to budget for two monitors that accept HDMI inputs (if you also select HDMI I/O). One will be your preview multiview, and the other will display your program output. The multiview displays your four input sources, highlighting the sources currently selected on the switcher busses.

Operation in FX mode, allowing you to combine two sources, is simple. Making a lot of changes "on the fly" to your effects settings can lead to live switching surprises unless you are very, very careful. I recommend settling on a "look" you want to use the vast majority of the time, and sticking with it. Operating that way will allow someone to easily train volunteers in a church environment. Settings menus are logical and, for the unit, extensive. The V-1HD offers a lot of flexibility for the price.

As I mentioned before, you have a long list of video live switching options to consider. But if a small footprint, conventional switcher approach, quiet operation, and easy price point are the elements that top your list, the Roland V-1HD may well fit on your short list.

It works as advertised, every single time we turn it on.

4 stars because the Blackmagic Design ATEM mini pro has a few more desirable features at the same price point, but we went through two of those, each one failing on us in as many months. This Roland unit has been completely without drama and competently does exactly what it says it will do…every single time. Good enough for me.

Not bad for the price

We're using it as a sub switch for vMix. We had three cameras going straight into vMix with full correction options. The V-1HD has an over all output correction menu, but we are not able to adjust the individual inputs for gain, hue, saturation, etc.

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
